Rights of Way - BR17

The DM&S describes BR 17 as:

"from Uffington BR24 at the Parish boundary at Idlebush Barrow, South-South-West, South-South-East and East to Lambourn Parish boundary at the Berkshire County boundary at its junction with Woolstone FP18".

The following notes also apply:

"Diversion order 22-8-77. The original route of BR17 was retained as a FP and numbered 18 in the Parish of Woolstone. See also Uffington BR24 and Uffington FP28".

General Condition Good, well drained grassy track
Length 1 mile
Navigation Problems Depending on the time of year and the condition of the grass, the exact line of the path may be difficult to distinguish. If in doubt head closer to the treeline to the west rather than the gallops to the east. Keep an eye open for horses on the gallops.
Stiles, gates or other obstacles None

Starting from the northern end, the bridleway starts immediately at a gap in the fence that marks the northern extent of the gallops of Woolstone Downs. Initially heading south-west then south, the bridleway follows a grassy track roughly 30-50m east of the treeline. Occassionally the ground is ploughed either side of the track. The gallops are to the east of this. The track on the ground is easy enough and heads gently downhill. Towards the southern end the track bears south-east then bears east to follow the hedge line to the end of the bridleway at the obvious junction.
